Lesson Four: Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

Using the Internet, Caitlin and Nigel find information about forest fires that leads the MathTek kids to the topic of estimation. The children generate ideas of what estimation is and some practical examples of how to make a good estimate. A discussion of how data can be used to make predictions results in a group project dealing with predicting the weather. Past records of snowfall and daily temperatures help the group make their predictions. “Rounding” is one of the strategies used to make good estimates.
