About the CD-ROM

The CD-ROM for the MathTek project is an interactive learning adventure.  A single CD-ROM for the series contains curriculum guides and information relevant to all eight math lessons .  Students and teachers are able to utilize the CD-ROM throughout the school year as an integral part of the classroom and extra-curricular learning experience.

The CD-ROMs are designed and produced as cross-platform software and incorporate illustrations, animations, text, sound (music and speech), and video segments to present an engaging, challenging and rewarding multimedia learning environment for the students.  The interactive CD-ROM element of the MathTek project enables the students to progress through grade level specific exercises and activities.

The design elements, the characters, and the lesson objectives presented in the videotape segments, curriculum, activities and lesson guides are incorporated into the CD-ROM.  While the curriculum guide, vocabulary, and Internet resources are an integral portion of the MathTek CD-ROM, the eight interactive lessons are designed to function as a stand-alone product that students can use in your classroom or at home.

The interface of the CD-ROM is predominantly graphical, with point-and-click navigation.  Illustrated environments facilitate the student’s exploration of concept-enforcing activities and lead the student to improved understanding of mathematical concepts.  The framework for the content of the CD-ROM follow the lesson sequence established by the videotaped episodes and the teachers guide.  Each lesson features three grade/skill-level paths, each with a distinct set of exercises.

Blind students and their teachers are able to access this CD-ROM material through the use of either a synthetic speech synthesizer or a refreshable Braille display attached to their PC.  For those students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, MathTek has incorporated audio files that are accessible as text files.  To view the transcript the student or teacher should select the ‘CC’ when starting the MathTek program.

CD-ROM multimedia programs have become increasingly sophisticated in interface and function.  Students of all ages and levels of cognition are being exposed to major multimedia productions at home, at school, and in entertainment facilities. The level of sophistication of these products is increasing while at the same time the age level for usability by younger students is decreasing.  The MathTek CD-ROM will provide a consumer-quality, engaging product for students in first, second, and third grades, that maintains serious curriculum objectives for teachers and parents.
